Build it, or buy it? There's a third answer.

Buy off-the-shelf and you bend your business to the software. Build custom and you pay in time and money for something that stops improving the day it ships. Alef is commercial software you can shape like a custom build — without commissioning one.

Why the usual two options disappoint

Both are reasonable choices. Both have the same problem underneath: you have to trade fit against cost, and whichever you pick, you feel it every day.

Buying off the shelf

It's fast and it's affordable, and for a while it's fine. Then you hit the parts of your operation the product wasn't designed for, and the workarounds begin.

  • Your process gets reshaped to match the software, rather than the other way round
  • The gaps get filled with more tools — and the data stops agreeing with itself
  • The one thing that makes your business different is the one thing it can't handle

Building it custom

It fits exactly, because it was drawn around you. The costs are the ones people underestimate: not just the build, but everything after it.

  • You wait for a first version before you can judge whether it was right
  • You now own software — the maintenance, the security, the person who understands it
  • It is finished the day it ships; every improvement after that is another project

The third answer: one product, shaped to you

Alef is commercial software — we are never starting from a blank page — but it is built to be shaped around how your operation actually runs. Two ways in, the same product behind both.

Start running

Take the system as it is today, use it, and tell us what doesn't match how you work. We build those changes into your system.

  • Begin free on Business Tools, or start a 30-day trial with no card
  • Take it as-built and there is no build fee at all — just the per-app subscription
  • Change it once you can see it working on your own data, not from a requirements doc

Start from your requirements

Tell us how your operation runs — the workflow, the rules, the systems it has to talk to — the way you would brief a custom build. We deliver it that way.

  • A scoped, quoted piece of work, so you know the number before it starts
  • Your fields, statuses, rules and screens, designed against your real cases
  • Delivered set up and running, not handed over as a specification to review

And it keeps getting better

This is the part a custom build cannot offer. Your system is a configured, customized instance of a product we are actively developing — not a private copy that stopped moving the day it was delivered. You stay on Alef, so what we ship next arrives for you too.

  • New modules and capability land in your system as we release them
  • Security, performance and platform work happen without a project to fund it
  • No codebase to maintain, no lone developer who understands how it works

Delivered running, not handed over

Either door ends the same way. We don't send a login and a manual — implementation means your team is using a working system on your own data.

  • Structured onboarding that captures how your business actually operates
  • Your data brought in and verified before go-live
  • Integrations to the systems you're keeping
  • Your org chart and roles mapped inside the system, and your team trained on it

What you're actually starting from

Not a framework or a toolkit — a working platform. Inventory and warehouse, orders and purchasing, CRM and sales, scheduling, invoicing and finance, even your website, on one set of records. Browse the module library to see what's live today.

  • Turn on the modules you need; add more as you grow
  • One login and one shared record, so the data agrees with itself
  • Built for real operations — lots, serials, barcodes, work on the floor

Common questions

Is this custom software or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf, customized. You are always on the Alef product — we never build you a separate system from scratch — but the product is designed to be configured and extended around how you work. You get the fit of a custom build with the economics and the ongoing development of a commercial one.

How is it different from just configuring any other software?

Most platforms let you rename a field and add a column. We go further: we take on the work of shaping the system to your operation as part of the engagement, including the parts that need real development. The difference is who does it and how far it goes — you describe the problem, we deliver the system.

What if what I need doesn't exist yet?

That's a normal conversation, not a dead end. Tell us on a call and we'll tell you honestly whether it's configuration, something we build for you as scoped work, or something that isn't a fit. We would rather say no than sell you a system that won't do the job.

What does it cost compared with a custom build?

Two parts: a per-app subscription to run the platform, and a one-time scoped fee to build your system — and if you take it as-built, there is no build fee. That's the structural difference from a custom build, where the entire cost is up front and every change afterwards is a new project. Full numbers are on the pricing page.

How long does it take?

Taking it as-built is typically live within a couple of weeks. A customized system is typically delivered in one to two months, depending on scope. Both are a different order of magnitude from commissioning software from scratch.

Do my customizations survive upgrades?

That is exactly what the model is designed for: your configuration and customization live with your account, on top of the product, so platform releases keep arriving. Where a change is deep enough that it needs ongoing care, we say so during scoping and it becomes part of the engagement — we would rather set that expectation up front than after.

Not sure which door you're walking through?

Most people aren't at first. Take 15 minutes, walk us through how work moves through your business, and we'll tell you honestly which one fits — or if we're not the right answer at all.
